An American man has gone viral after expressing deep frustration over the Nigerian immigration system, claiming he is being unfairly denied a Nigerian passport despite being legally married to a Nigerian woman and fathering two children with her.

In a video making the rounds on social media, the visibly displeased man appeared alongside his Nigerian wife to shed light on what they described as a “discriminatory and outdated” citizenship policy in the country.

According to him, while a foreign woman who marries a Nigerian man can swiftly gain citizenship and obtain a passport, a foreign man married to a Nigerian woman must reside in the country for at least 15 years before becoming eligible for the same privilege.

“It’s not right,” the man said, visibly upset. “I’m married to a Nigerian woman, we have two kids together, and yet I’m not recognized as Nigerian. But a woman in the same situation would already have her papers.”

His wife also voiced her displeasure, noting that the law clearly reflects gender bias. She called on the Nigerian government to urgently review its immigration policy to promote equality and reflect modern realities where intercultural marriages are increasingly common.

Many Nigerians took to social media to back the couple’s call for reform, describing the policy as unjust and archaic in a globalized world.

As the debate intensifies, it remains to be seen whether the Nigerian government will take steps to amend the laws to reflect equal treatment of foreign spouses, regardless of gender.
