Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, has been suspended by President John Mahama following allegations of misconduct, marking the first time a sitting Chief Justice in the country is being formally investigated under the constitutional process.

The chief justice was suspended on the heels of three separate petitions submitted to the presidency, which accuse Justice Torkornoo of tampering with court records and misappropriating public funds. Though the specific details of the allegations remain undisclosed, the petitions were deemed serious enough to warrant immediate action.

A spokesperson for President Mahama confirmed that the decision to suspend the Chief Justice was made after due consultation with the Council of State. “The President believes there is sufficient basis to allow for a thorough investigation into the matter, hence the suspension,” the spokesperson said.

The committee tasked with investigating the allegations is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Pwamang and includes renowned anti-corruption advocate and former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo.

Justice Torkornoo, who made history in June 2023 as Ghana’s 15th Chief Justice and the third woman to occupy the role, now faces intense scrutiny as the investigation unfolds. The outcome could have significant implications for the judiciary and the broader fight against corruption in Ghana.
