A law student armed with an axe killed a staff member and seriously injured a security guard during a violent evening attack inside a lecture hall at the University of Warsaw in Poland.
A law student attacked a staff member with an axe at a university in Poland, killing her and injuring a security guard. The attack occurred on Wednesday evening inside a main campus building.
The 22-year-old Polish man, a third-year law student, was arrested shortly after the incident. His motive for the brutal assault is still unclear. Authorities revealed that the law student was not from Warsaw.
The victim, a 53-year-old staff member, worked as a porter and was pronounced dead at the scene. The security guard, who attempted to assist her, was seriously injured and is currently recovering.
The attacker entered the university grounds at around 6:40 p.m. local time, heading toward the Auditorium Maximum, the university’s largest lecture hall. The attack took place inside the building.
In the aftermath, the university expressed its deep sorrow, calling the incident a “huge tragedy.” As a mark of respect, Thursday was declared a day of mourning, and all classes were suspended.
The rector of the university, Alojzy Nowak, stated, “We express our great sorrow and sympathy to the family and loved ones.”
Justice Minister Adam Bodnar, who was nearby during the attack, praised a protection officer who helped the injured security guard. “This brutal attack must be severely punished,” said Warsaw’s mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski, who also expressed his shock over the incident.
Due to the tragedy, the university also canceled its annual Juwenalia music festival, which was scheduled for Friday and Saturday, to allow the community time to mourn.
