Laolu Akande, a respected journalist and former media adviser to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has voiced his deep disappointment over the Buhari-led administration’s failure to effectively tackle corruption—a key promise that brought the All Progressives Congress (APC) to power in 2015.

In a candid discussion during a recent online forum, Laolu Akande acknowledged that the Buhari government missed a significant opportunity to address corruption, despite his role within the administration. He made it clear, however, that his position was limited to speaking on behalf of the Vice President and the government, without holding any executive authority.

Reflecting on the administration’s shortcomings, Laolu Akande pointed specifically to President Muhammadu Buhari, who also served as the Minister of Petroleum, as being responsible for the lack of progress in combating corruption within the oil sector.

“The reality is that when it came to fighting corruption, the Buhari administration failed to live up to its promises, and it’s deeply embarrassing,” Akande said. “People often say to me, ‘You were part of that government.’ Yes, I was, but my role was to communicate on behalf of the Vice President and the administration. I didn’t have the power to implement policies.”

Laolu Akande did not shy away from his discontent, stating that he was personally disappointed by the Buhari administration’s inability to deliver on its anti-corruption agenda, which had been a cornerstone of their campaign. He urged the current administration under President Bola Tinubu to seize the opportunity to correct past mistakes and fulfill the promises made to Nigerians.

“The administration missed the chance to solve the corruption problem, and I am personally embarrassed by that. I’ve said it publicly before, and I’ll say it again: the APC wasted eight years of Nigeria’s time. But now, President Tinubu has the chance to make things right for both the party and the country,” Akande emphasized.

He also shared his reasons for initially supporting Buhari, recalling that he joined the campaign in 2014 because he believed in Buhari’s reputation for integrity and was encouraged by the selection of Osinbajo as Vice President. However, he acknowledged that the government fell short in its efforts to tackle corruption, despite the high hopes many had when they first took office.

“Nigerians who paid attention saw the difference when we took action, but the truth remains that the government I served in did not solve the problem of corruption,” Akande concluded.

All eyes are now on President Tinubu to see how he will address these lingering issues and restore public trust.
