AGF Takes Over Case of Detained #EndBadGovernance Minors
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has taken over the prosecution of 75 #EndBadGovernance protesters, ages 12 to 15, who were arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday.
The minors face serious charges, including terrorism, an attempt to overthrow the government, and alleged mutiny, all connected to their participation in nationwide protests against economic hardship.
The arraignment has sparked significant backlash from civil society organizations and opposition leaders, who have condemned the government’s detention and prosecution of children. They urged the administration to intervene promptly, calling the charges excessive and the treatment of the minors inhumane.
In a statement released Friday night, AGF Fagbemi acknowledged that his office was aware of the case. He indicated that certain aspects would be reviewed before he could reach an informed decision on how to proceed. He also clarified that while it is beyond his authority to alter the court’s remand order, he has directed the Nigeria Police to transfer the case file to his office, assigning it to the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) on Saturday.
The AGF’s statement reads, “It has just come to my notice that the police have arraigned those arrested in connection with the EndBadGovernance protest for various offenses, including treason. There are some issues my office will need to look into regarding the matter to enable me to make an informed decision.”
Fagbemi further noted that he has instructed the DPPF to explore options to request an earlier court date, as the next hearing is currently adjourned until January.
In Friday’s hearing, Justice Obiora Egwuatu granted bail to 67 of the 76 protesters, setting bail at N10 million each. For those below 15 years, one surety, who must be a civil servant, is required. However, conditions within the courtroom shocked observers, as several minors appeared visibly malnourished. Four children, struggling to stand, had to be rushed out after collapsing on the courtroom floor.
All 76 protesters, primarily minors, were detained between August 1 and 10, during nationwide protests triggered by economic difficulties. The heavy charges and severe bail terms have deepened calls for reform, as many Nigerians continue to voice frustration over the government’s response to peaceful protests.
