Real Reason Netflix Is ‘Quitting’ Nigeria

Netflix on exit

Netflix is reportedly planning to exit the Nigerian market due to the country’s ongoing economic challenges.

This decision comes amidst rising inflation, as highlighted by the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics, and other unfavorable economic conditions.

An anonymous Netflix representative confirmed the development, citing several reasons for the move. “We’re exiting the Nigerian market,” the official revealed. “We’ve experienced significant losses in paying subscribers, and the unfavorable naira-to-dollar exchange rate has made operations increasingly difficult.”

Netflix’s exit is notable, as the streaming giant first entered Nigeria six years ago with the release of ‘Lionheart’, a groundbreaking production that elevated the global recognition of Nollywood. Since then, the platform has been instrumental in showcasing Nigerian cinema to the world and fostering local talent.

While Netflix has faced subscriber losses in other regions, Nigeria becomes the first major economy to lose access to the platform’s premium services. This decision reflects the severe economic challenges faced by the country under the current administration.
