By Ekene Dike
Chelsea battled to defeat Leicester City 2-1 in front of their energetic fans and overtake their opponents in third position on the Premier League table. The Blues also put themselves in pole position to qualify for the Champions League going into the final day of the season.
Wounds were still fresh from Chelsea’s heartbreaking defeat to Leicester City in the FA Cup final. This triggered the right response as Chelsea dominated the whole of the first half. They were unlucky not to have found the opener in the first half.
Timo Werner could not contain his joy when he found the back of the net twice, only to be denied by the VAR. Mason Mount and Thiago Silva also came close with decent attempts, however, the first half ended goalless.
One minute after the restart, the deadlock was finally broken through Bem Chilwell’s corner which picked out Anthony Rudiger’s knee to put it into an open goal. Seven minutes after the hour mark, Werner was brought down by Fofana in the area. Jorginho sent Schmeichel the wrong way to dispatch the penalty and extend Chelsea’s lead.
Brendan Rodgers introduced Kelechi Iheanacho from the bench and the Nigerian pulled one back clinically in the 77th minute. The Foxes went in search of the equalizer afterwards, and they came close. Ayoze Perez overhit his shot from inside the box while Chelsea refused to be charitable at the back. Tempers began to rise towards the end of the game. More-so, Rudiger and Ricardo had a bizzare moment which aggravated when other teammates interfered.
After the duration of disarray on the pitch, play continued and Chelsea held on to win a game which they killed two birds with one stone.
