Delta North: Anxiety In Nwaoboshi’s Camp As S/Court Nears Verdict

There is palpable tension in the camp of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi ahead of the Supreme Court judgment on the Delta North Senate seat as supporters worry over serial court cases involving the politician.

Nwaoboshi who won the seat for the second time in a row last February is embroiled in a fight with the multi-billionaire, Ned Nwoko for the seat. Nwoko, 59 who served in the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2003 had lately been in the news for his marriage to the teenage movie star, Regina Daniels.

Nwaoboshi’s supporters across the Delta North Senatorial District met on Wednesday evening in Asaba at what was said to be caucus meeting.

Sources at the meeting revealed that allegations of blackmail and sabotage of the senator were raised with insinuations of moles within the camp supplying evidence to the Nwoko camp ahead of the Supreme Court judgment.

Central to the dispute is the authenticity of the ticket won by Nwaoboshi to fly the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for the election. Nwoko claims to have won the ticket which he claims was rigged to favour Nwaoboshi at the last minute.

Although some supporters vowed to support Nwaoboshi with their blood, there was still fear that the many enemies that the many enemies that Nwaoboshi has stored over the years could be working to torpedo his second term stint in the Senate.

“We are afraid of some documents in possession of Prince Ned Nwoko over the party primaries, and the situation is clear that some of the party members want Senator Peter Nwaoboshi disgraced,” one source revealed.

“We fear that the Supreme Court Judgement might not be in the favour of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi following the documents in the possession of Prince Ned Nwoko that nobody has apart from the party chieftains”, one strong supporter of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi said.

Chief Patrick Ukah the state Commissioner for Information who also is a strong party chieftain from Delta North, however, dismissed the fear of the unknown, saying that Senator Nwaoboshi’s political track record speak volumes as no amount of blackmail and gang up will inhibit his victories in all the court cases.

While his supporters are passionate in their support for Senator Nwaoboshi, the senator’s abrasiveness and mixed record in office has not helped him in stemming support for Nwoko’s senatorial bid.

The abandoned Illah – Ebu Road is one of the reasons those against him cite. It is claimed that the senator abandoned the road because the people in that area did not vote for him an Illah resident said.

Senator Nwaoboshi while in Asaba last weekend told journalists that the Supreme Court would come in his favour, insisting that Prince Nwoko was wasting his time and resources chasing shadows. He claimed that those encouraging Nwoko were feeding fat from the rival’s resources.

A five man panel of Supreme Court Justices led by the Acting Chief Judge of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad had granted application for an accelerated hearing in the case filed by Nwoko against Nwaoboshi.

Nwoko is praying the apex court to upturn the Court of Appeal judgment which declared incumbent Senator Nwaoboshi as duly elected Senator for the Delta North Senatorial District.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier in March 2019 declared Nwoko as the authentic winner of the primaries, on the ground that PDP wrongly substituted Nwoko’s name with that of Nwaoboshi in the list of candidates submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
