Three-time African champions Nigeria were compelled to a 4-4 draw against Sierra Leone at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin on Friday.

Nigeria got off to a flying start by establishing a four goal lead in the first forty minutes. They however got carried away by the early advantage and got bamboozled at the end of the game as the resilient Leone stars equalized 4-4.

Everton star Alex Iwobi bagged a brace, while Napoli front man Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukuweze had their names on the scoresheet as well. At four goals up, the game looked over for the Sierra Leone side, not until the Super Eagles surrendered the lead. Goals from Quee, a double from Kamara and Bundu were enough to snatch the win from Nigeria.

The game began frenetically as both sides searched for an opening goal. It was Nigeria that would do that, from a sublime goal from Alex Iwobi. Osimhen benefitted from a fine cross from Sanusi to extend the margin in the 29th minute.

Gernt Rohr’s men were the better side and Alex Iwobi got his second of the game in the 29th minute. Samuel Chukwueze rounded off the scoring for the Super Eagles with a fine solo effort. Quee reduced the goal cushion for Sierra Leone as it ended 4-1 in the first half.

Half time team talks from coach John Keister definitely motivated his dampened players. 72 minutes into the game, Kamara reduced the deficit to two goals. That was after Chukweze’s had been ruled to have been offside earlier in the second half. Bundu got the third eight minutes later.

Kamara then gave the game an end for the ages as he buried home an equalizer to complete the epic comeback with just four minutes left on the clock. Operation no retreat, no surrender worked exceedingly well as both sides settled for a 4-4 draw.

As a result, Nigeria remain on top of the Group L standings with seven points from three games, ahead of second-placed Benin (four), who host Lesotho (one) on Saturday, while Sierra Leone are in third with two points.
