New Ideas As Umahi Woos Old Foes In Ebonyi APC
By GWG Staff
Dave Umahi’s defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC will has stirred confusion among the hitherto bitterly divided ranks of the party in Ebonyi State.
Many of the party chieftains who fled the former ruling party because of the governor to the APC, GWG gathered, are weighing their options in the light of their past experience with Governor Umahi.
Among the notable chieftains who fled the PDP for the APC were the immediate past governor of the state, Mr. Martins Elechi and a former commissioner in the state, Engr. Dr. Paul Okorie, a popular APC governorship aspirant ahead of the 2019 General Election.
Before Umahi’s arrival in the APC the party was bitterly divided among various contenting groups with the minister of science and technology, Dr. Ogbonanya Onu, Senator Julius Ucha, former Governor Elechi and member of the House of Representatives, Chinedu Ogar leading at least four identifiable factions.
However, the arrival of Umahi and the decision of the national leadership to handover the party structure to Umahi may have forced the different factions to submit to the new leadership which has Stanley Emegha, the Ebonyi State commissioner for internal security as chairman of the new APC state caretaker committee.
Speaking at an interactive session with APC stakeholders last weekend, the governor while noting the presence of representatives of many of his former political foes said:
“This marriage is a miracle,” the governor said at the meeting in recognition of the fact that several of his erstwhile political enemies who he chased from the PDP were present at the .
“I am not afraid of anybody. Those fighting against the State, this fight will be there last fight. I will publish what I have done for the leaders of the State. If you benefit and refuse to tell your people, I will tell them,” the governor said at the meeting.
Onu, Elechi and Ogar were absent at the meeting but their agents were present at the meeting.
Sources, however, say that the seeming silence of the former belligerent factions of the APC do not mean that they have accepted or forgiven him for his actions in driving them from the PDP into the APC.
“Many of them are just waiting to reap the fruits of belonging to ruling party and don’t forget that they have suffered long in opposition and many of them are waiting for what they can get before bolting,” a source privy to the developments told GWG.
Despite the acrimony that engulfed Umahi and Elechi, it was, however, gathered that the immediate former governor of the state would not defect to the PDP with the arrival of Umahi.
“Elechi is too old to be playing those games, I don’t see him defecting he will just abide there,” the source disclosed.
However, Dr. Okorie it was gathered may not be so forgiving and may set his path towards the PDP. However, for many others, they will wait to see if they can get their pound of flesh in naira back from their former tormentor!
