Imo North: Supreme Court Makes Position Known On APC Petition

The Supreme Court on Thursday made its position known on the petition supposedly written by the All Progressives Congress (APC) against some justices of the Supreme Court over the Imo North senatorial logjam.

The apex court in a statement issued by its Director of Press and Information, Festus Akande, said that Justice Abdu Aboki, a member of the five-man panel hearing a case concerning the senatorial election, was not among those named in the petition announced by another judge of the court on Tuesday.

Justice Dattijo Muhammad, who is the head of the five-man panel hearing the case had in the course of the hearing disclosed that he alongside Justices Aboki and Helen Ogunwumiju were fingered by the APC petition of meeting secretly with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to subvert justice in the Imo North case.

Justice Muhammad had denied the allegation at that time.

Reacting to the petition, the Supreme Court said that while Justice Aboki was not named in the petition, the apex court admonished litigants to be careful of their actions and assertions in issues before the court.

The Court said:

We need to state that the news that occupied strategic space in the media yesterday, Wednesday 24th March, 2021, which emanated from a petition purportedly written by the acting chair of the All Progressives Congress and Governor of Yobe State, Alhaji Mai-Mala Buni, against three Justices of the Supreme Court never mentioned the name of Hon. Justice Abdu Aboki even though he is on the panel of five Justices hearing the appeal that resulted from the Imo North Senatorial District Bye Election conducted on 5th October, 2020. The information in circulation is not only wrong but equally misleading.
