The Kogi State Government has bowed to pressures and has agreed to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to residents of the state despite state officials denying the existence of the virus in the state.

The state commissioner for health, Dr. Saka Haruna gave the administration’s inclination in a chat with The Cable, an online newspaper.

He promised unhindered access and cooperation with the federal authorities on the issue.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that as at Monday, March 29, 2021, Kogi was the only state in the country yet to receive the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for administration to residents.

In an interview with The Cable on Monday, Dr. Haruna while noting the readiness of the state to receive the vaccine in the week said:

“We have done the micro planning and everything has been completed with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).”

“Anybody that is willing to receive the vaccine (will receive it); nobody is exempted. And nobody will be forced to receive the vaccine.”

He added that the state will announce detailed plans including the location of the vaccination launch after receiving the supplies.

The commissioner for health, however, did not say if the governor who had earlier vowed not to take the vaccine would change his mind.

In many states, the governors took the vaccine as a way of encouraging the citizenry to follow suit.

“The governor does not have to receive the vaccine before others will; I don’t think there is anything special about COVID that we have to bring the governor out to come and receive the vaccine,” he said.

Governor Yahaya Bello who had repeatedly doubted the existence of the virus in the state had openly declared that he would not take the vaccine, adding:

“COVID-19 is just a minute aspect of what we’re treating in Kogi state. I’m not going to subject the people of Kogi state to vaccination, or I will not make them guinea pigs.”
