The Super Eagles of Nigeria fell to a shock 0-1 defeat to minnows Central African Republic in their Group C Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

The game seemed destined for a draw until Karl Namnganda popped up in the 90th minute to give CAR an unlikely 1-0 victory.

The Super Eagles had won their opening two qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde and were expected to record a victory against CAR.

Speaking after the defeat, Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr revealed the disappointment in the Nigerian dressing room

He said, “The players are still disappointed in the dressing room and still not understanding why we could lose this match,”

“When we analyzed it, we dominated possession of the ball, we had several opportunities to score but we did not score and very often in football, there was a counter and our opponents scored.

“Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, we lost. We had the opportunity to score but we couldn’t.

“We have to recover, and we have to make some changes in the team. We missed the creativity of Iwobi, we also missed Ndidi so much.

“It was not easy for [Frank] Onyeka and a first-timer [Taiwo] Awoniyi to come in this team.”

The Super Eagles will have their sights set on the return fixture, where they tackle the CAR in Douala on Sunday, October 10th.

Nigeria tops Group C with six points after three games played, followed by Cape Verde with 4 points, following their 2-1 win against Liberia who sits in 4th place with three points. CAR sits in the third spot with three points.
