If the Olympic Eagles defeat Tanzania in the first leg of their U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Saturday in Dar es Salaam, they will earn $20,000 in prize money.

The announcement was made on the eve of the team’s departure for Dar es Salaam by Aminu Balele Kurfi, Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) task force on youth competitions.

A Kenyan Airways flight brought the athletes and their representatives to the East African country on Thursday evening.

The game is scheduled to take place at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The winner of the two legs will advance to the final round of the qualifiers.

The AFCON 2023 will serve as a qualifier for the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris, France.

The team, led by coach Salisu Yusuf, stayed at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan for two weeks.

They have played two friendlies so far, against VIA Football Academy, Ibadan, and Shooting Stars Sports Club.

The initial 32-man list had also been reduced, and fresh legs had been invited to bolster the squad ahead of the two-leg match against Tanzania.

They lost the first friendly game against VIA Academy 3-0, but tied the second against 3SC 1-1.

Salisu Yusuf, the team’s head coach, stated after the 3SC friendly, “It was a good match.” It was the first game that put us through a true test and allowed us to experiment with the squad.”

“We have to be ready despite the circumstances we find ourselves, we are trying to build a team with a positive mind and get the result we need against Tanzania,” Salisu said of the team’s readiness in the face of the squad changes.
