exam stampede in UNICAL

Twenty students of the University of Calabar (Unical) were on Saturday rushed to the university’s teaching hospital following a stampede at an exam hall at the campus.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the stampede occurred where the students were billed to write the General Studies and Communication Skills (GSS) examination that was postponed to Saturday from Friday.

The GSS examination was for the 100 level students from all the faculties of the university.

The examination, meant to be taken in batches, saw the students rushing to secure space from the few available ones.

NAN reports that Saturday’s GSS examination was meant to be the climax of the institution’s second semester examinations that started on Oct. 16.

Meanwhile, the university’s management has declined to comment on the stampede.

A competent source, however, confirmed the incident. (NAN)

GWG.ng reports that the incident in UNICAL that saw the 20 students being hospitalised on account of the exam stampede came as it was disclosed that the Ahman Pategi University (APU), Patigi, Kwara State, has collaborated with the National Universities Commission (NUC) on commencement of Faculty of Education.

This was contained in a statement signed by Alhaji Hammed Olufadi, the Registrar of the University, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.

Olufadi said the collaboration would help to facilitate a seamless commencement of the Faculty of Education University.
