How Terrorists Killed ECWA Pastor, Abducted Wife In Kaduna

Details are emerging of the tragic incident in which Reverend Mako Maraya, the Pastor of ECWA Ministry Damakasuwa DCC in Tsam Chiefdom, Kauru local government area (LGA) of Kaduna State, was gruesomely killed in the early hours of Saturday, November 18, 2023. The assailants invaded the Rectory of 2nd ECWA Church Damakasuwa, where Reverend Maraya served, and gunned him down around 1 am. Disturbingly, his wife was abducted during the attack.

“The abductors, according to the national publicity secretary of the Chawai Development Association (CDA) Comrade Raphael Joshua, on behalf of the CDA national president, Abel Habila Adamu, had demanded N3 million ransom to set the cleric’s wife free.”

The Association condemned this heinous act as part of a series of calculated assaults constituting a religious war against their community and people.

“It is saddening to say that our land is sieged by religious jihadists and those saddled with the constitutional responsibility of securing our land, protecting the lives and property of our people are seen lazily compromising the security situation of our land.”

The statement highlighted the paradoxical occurrence of the attack near the Damakasuwa Police Divisional office, emphasizing the urgent need for a more proactive security approach.

“Such act continues to create fear of conspiracy and uncertainty in the minds of our locals who are now losing confidence in the capacity and willingness of the security operatives to secure and protect them from these evildoers,” CDA stated.

The Association recalled a previous attack on Reverend Maraya in August, revealing that the same assailants inflicted severe injuries during that incident. Despite the scars of that encounter, the attackers struck again, ultimately leading to Reverend Maraya’s tragic demise.

“We hereby condemn such orchestrated act of religious cleansing and calculated jihad being launched in our dear peaceful nation. It is unacceptable!”

Amidst these challenges, the Chawai Development Association urged the community to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant. Emphasizing the importance of reporting suspicious activities, they called on security agencies to intensify efforts for the safe release of the abducted wife.

“The national leadership of Chawai Development Association (CDA) hereby reminds all and sundry in Chawai to remain resolute in the pursuit of peace and ensure promoting religious tolerance, being security conscious, and rising to defend our land with legitimate means, which is to report to constituted authorities all suspicious movements of unknown people within our communities for questioning and arrest.”

The Association extended heartfelt condolences to the ECWA Damakasuwa DCC, the Ribang and Chawai Communities, mourning the loss of a respected leader. They called for unity, religious tolerance, and collective efforts to safeguard their land.

“When contacted, Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Mansur Hassan, also confirmed the killing and abduction.”

Confirming the incident, Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Mansur Hassan, assured that the police are actively working to secure the safe release of the abducted wife and apprehend the perpetrators for legal consequences.
