Chidinma Okafor Sets Sights On Guinness World Record With 72-Hour Crochet-a-Thon

Nigerian crochetist and social entrepreneur, Chidinma Modupe Okafor, is gearing up for a remarkable 72-hour crochet-a-thon with the goal of breaking the Guinness World Record (GWR).

Crochet, a needlework craft, involves creating stitches by looping thread with a hooked needle, utilizing varying numbers of loops on the hook.

Scheduled from December 24th to 27th, the marathon crocheting event will take place at GOGE Africa in Lagos, commencing at 12 pm.

Influenced by the achievements of Nigerian figures like chef Hilda Baci, who set a world record for the longest cooking marathon, Nigerian youths have increasingly aimed to set or surpass world records across various domains. Just last month, Helen Williams, another Nigerian, set a new record for creating the longest handmade wig, an impressive 351.28 meters (1,152 ft 5 in), spanning over 11 days with an investment exceeding N200,000 (£2,031; $2,493).

Chidinma, originally from Imo State, leads the renowned crochet brand, 6chi_crocheting_brand.

As reported by The Nation newspaper, Chidinma’s crochet journey commenced as a hobby at a young age and later evolved into a passion for crafting diverse accessories and dresses.

Motivated by unwavering commitment, she aims to elevate her career through the crochet business. In preparation for this record-breaking attempt, the 30-year-old artist diligently focused on three key areas: physical endurance, mental fortitude, and assembling a cohesive support team. As quoted by The Nation, Chidinma stated, “I’ve undergone rigorous physical endurance training to bolster stamina for continuous crochet sessions. Mentally, I’ve trained myself to stay focused and resilient during this crochet marathon. Additionally, with the aid of my dedicated team, we’re set to handle documentation, witness requirements, and ensure strict adherence to guidelines.”

Embarking on significant endeavors may appear straightforward, yet the depth of courage required becomes apparent only when one, like Chidinma, takes on such challenges.
