Ganduje Trends As Minister Resigns Over New Bribe Video

The national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC Dr Abdullahi Ganduje was trending in Nigerian Twitter space on Thursday after Zambia’s Foreign Minister, Stanley Kakubo, stepped down from his position after he was found captured on video receiving a substantial sum of money from a Chinese businessman.

Mr. Kakubo who acknowledged his presence in the video, however, asserted that the funds were related to a legitimate business transaction in contrast to the case of Ganduje who claimed that the video that portrayed him in a similar situation in 2018 was doctored.

Ganduje was eventually exonerated over the alleged bribery video by the Kano State House of Assembly and his hand raised for re-election the following year by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Zambia’s minister of foreign affairs in resigning emphasized that he was prompted by the desire to prevent the government from being “distracted” by the ensuing controversy.

Drawing a comparative note, the narrative shifts to Nigeria, specifically highlighting the case of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who, during his tenure as the Kano State Governor, faced a similar situation but chose not to resign. Interestingly, Ganduje later assumed the position of APC Chairman.

The reactions from Nigerians, prominently featured in the X comment section, vividly express their discontent with this disparity. Many argue that if a consistent approach, akin to Zambia’s minister taking responsibility and resigning, were adopted in Nigeria, corruption might have been significantly curtailed.

The underlying sentiment is that Zambia’s minister voluntarily resigned, admitting culpability without anyone shielding him within the system.

This comparison underscores the complex dynamics surrounding political accountability and public expectations, shedding light on the contrasting approaches taken in different countries when high-ranking officials face allegations of impropriety.

See some reactions below on the video and its relations to Ganduje as captured by Nigerians:

@raisz: What we do over where is to reinforce failure, political leaders are hardly held accountable to there actions

@lozzyfather: Hahahaha hahahaha hahahaha chai, e say na Zambian Ganduje. And you still wan make heaven lai this lai this. Lol

@onnouv: We are too careless in Nigeria else a Ganduje would have been sent behind bars

@Akpomamus186428: Unfortunately, in Nigeria criminals are celebrated and rewarded. Nigeria is a crime scene.

@AdebayoCidiq: Corruption can’t be checked here. It is what pays our bills. Secondary students pay per ‘paper’ to pass WAEC.
