Thabo Mbeki alive

Thabo Mbeki, former president of South Africa, is well and alive, the Thabo Mbeki Foundation has said in rebuttal of the viral news of the death of the country’s second post-apartheid president.

GWG.ng reports that even his Wikipedia profile page was updated to reflect the hoax of the death of Thabo Mbeki.

In a statement on Wednesday, The Thabo Mbeki Foundation said: “We urge the public to rely on official channels for accurate information about President Mbeki’s well-being and activities.”

Recall that there was a similar death report during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Also, the Foundation came out to debunk it then.

Mbeki succeeded the country’s first black president, Nelson Mandela. He served as the President of South Africa from 1999 to 2008.

He is respected for his intellectual approach to governance, and his contributions to post-Apatheid South Africa.

GWG.ng reports that the clarification that Thabo Mbeki is alive came as it emerged that Israel is to face accusation of genocide before an international court, with hearings based on a South African complaint scheduled for January 11 and 12.

The dates were announced Wednesday evening by the International Court of Justice, the highest UN court, in The Hague.

According to the court, South Africa will make its case on January 11 and Israel on the 12th, with two hours planned for each side.

South Africa had invoked the Genocide Convention in its complaint filed with the court on Friday. Both South Africa and Israel have signed the convention.
