Nigerian singer Teni has been at the center of a heated controversy after a video surfaced showing her prostrating before socialite IBD Dende on a flight. The gesture, interpreted by many as a sign of respect and admiration, sparked a backlash from some Nigerians who accused Teni of “disrespecting” former President Muhammadu Buhari during a previous encounter.

The comparison sparked a wave of criticism, with some Nigerians calling out Teni for her perceived hypocrisy and also of supporting the alleged deeds of the controversial socialite, IBD Dende who had in the past been named over walking in the wrong path of the law.

However, Teni has now broken her silence on the issue, responding to the backlash in a statement posted on her X handle. According to Teni, she met IBD Dende in 2014, long before her rise to fame, and he had shown her kindness and support. She expressed that her gesture of prostration was a sign of respect and gratitude for his past benevolence. However, she emphasized that she had no knowledge of his alleged criminal activities at the time of their encounter.

Teni categorically stated that she does not support or condone criminal behavior, and she trusts that the law will take its course. Her response aims to clear up any misconceptions and reassure her fans that she values integrity and ethical conduct.

“I met IBD in 2014 and he was good to me even before I became famous. When I see him, it’s always love. I had no knowledge of any criminal activities associated with him. I do not support criminals, so let the law take its course.” She wrote

This development marks a turning point in the controversy, as Teni’s clarification has sparked a renewed debate about the complexities of relationships, respect, and accountability. While some continue to criticize her initial actions, others have applauded her willingness to listen and respond to the concerns of her fans and the wider community.

@Danielregha: Teni the news about IBD & the Nigerian Customs made headlines for days, saying u had no idea or knowledge of any criminal activities associated with him is unbelievable; So no-one from ur crew discussed it or even sent u a screenshot? IBD case is one thing but let’s not forget how u associated with MC Oluomo too, & was seen joyfully associating with him at an event. Says a lot about ur type of person.

@realolaudah: But I guess you knew MC Oluomo as the king of agberos in Lagos and a chief enforcer when you sang about him in one of your lyrics eulogizing him as a super hero? You are really who you are, Ma’am. You can’t change your values. They’re already embedded within you.
