Nigerian singer Ewa Cole has taken legal action against two key figures in the entertainment industry, Funke Akindele and her ex-husband, JJC Skillz alleging copyright infringement.

The dispute centers on the unauthorized use of her songs “Opoor” and “Bhad Garl” in the movie series “She Must Be Obeyed,” produced by SceneOne Entertainment and co-directed by Funke Akindele and JJC Skillz, her ex-husband.

According to the case filed at the Federal High Court of Lagos, Ewa Cole claims ownership rights to the two songs. She asserts that despite being approached by Tony Ugiagbe (Topage) to produce soundtracks for the movie, she later learned her contributions were rejected. However, she discovered her songs had been reproduced by artistes Waje and Veeiye and used in the production without her consent or credit.

The lawsuit also implicates Amazon Web Services Nigeria Ltd. (BoomPlay), Amazon Web Services Inc., and Apple Inc., alleging their involvement in the global distribution and revenue generation from the series, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in September 2023.

In response, Ewa Cole is seeking N300 million in damages for labor infringement. She requests a permanent injunction to prevent further unauthorized use, performance, or redistribution of her musical compositions. Additionally, she demands a 45 percent share of all profits derived from the use, performance, duplication, and sale of the two songs.
