The hierarchy of the All Progressives Congress, APC has decided on the party’s candidate for the Edo State governorship election and fixed its mind on Senator Monday Okpebholo.

Very authoritative party sources disclosed to GWG.ng that the decision came after party leaders rejected the choice of one of the aspirants from Edo South being marketed by a prominent party leader from the state.

The party leader believed to have the ears of President Bola Tinubu, it was gathered, had put his choice on the ascendancy for the Edo 2024 race, with the claim that he had been authorized by the Presidential Villa to present any person of his choice as the party’s candidate.

However, the choice presented was said to be clouded with many issues with a reputation that could not be put forward to voters.

GWG.ng gathered that the decision to focus on Senator Okpebholo was also based on the desirability of presenting a candidate from Edo Central to appease the quest of the political leaders from the zone for a governor from the region.

“Esan leaders have been working round the clock at all levels to ensure that the next governor comes from Edo Central.”

Their quest, it was gathered, was helped by the apparent support for one of the more controversial aspirants from Edo South said to have the backing of the leader of the party and the fact that the choice did not meet the desirability of the national leaders.

“All the leaders of the party have decided on Senator Okpebholo emerging as candidate and the primary is just a formality,” the source confirmed on Friday morning.

One party source said that the choice of the party’s candidate is a direct loss for the former governor of the state, Senator Adams Oshiomhole who it is believed was not directly backing Okpebholo for the primary.

GWG.ng reports that the primary which is going to be by direct method is to hold on Saturday, February 17 with Senator Hope Uzodimma as chairman of the Organising Committee. Though an ally of Senator Oshiomhole, the Imo State governor is expected to go along with the decision of the party leaders.
