New York earthquake

Flights out of New York’s major airports were disrupted on Friday after a magnitude 4.8 earthquake was felt across New York and the surrounding areas.

GWG.ng reports that the earthquake which was also felt at the United Nation headquarters temporarily disrupted a hearing on the Hamas-Israel war in Gaza.

The epicentre of the tremor was near Lebanon, New Jersey, about 40 miles (64km) west of New York City.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul responding to the development said that the state is taking the earthquake very seriously because of potential aftershocks.

Flights are being grounded at JFK Airport in New York and Newark International in New Jersey

Hochul says her team are reviewing the state’s infrastructure following the quake

Mayor Eric Adams says New Yorkers should go about their normal day, and first responders are “working to make sure the city is safe”

Charita Walcott, resident of New York’s Bronx district, says the quake felt “like a violent rumble that lasted about 30 seconds or so”.

GWG.ng reports that President Joe Biden who was briefed about the situation is said to be monitoring developments.

The East coast of the United States are not as prone to earthquakes as the West Coast.
