The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has thrown its weight behind organized labour’s decision to embark on a nationwide strike from Monday, June 3, 2024.

GWG.ng reports that the strike is in protest of the delay in the enactment of a new national minimum wage.

In a statement issued on Sunday by NANS President, Pedro Obi, the association described labour’s demands as “legitimate and reasonable”. Obi emphasized that the current economic realities have severely eroded the purchasing power of the average Nigerian worker, making it difficult for many families to meet their basic needs.

“The welfare of our parents and guardians, who are predominantly workers and civil servants, has a direct impact on the youth and student population of Nigeria,” Obi said. “An improved minimum wage would translate into better living conditions for millions of Nigerian families, thereby fostering a more conducive environment for students to focus on their education and personal development.”

NANS called on all students, civil society organizations, and citizens to support labour in its bid to reach a mutually beneficial agreement on the minimum wage with the government. The association stressed that a prompt resolution to this issue is vital for maintaining industrial harmony and ensuring that educational institutions continue to function without disruptions.

“We stand in solidarity with the labour movement and Nigerian workers in their quest for a fair and just wage,” Obi declared. “We urge all stakeholders to lend their voices to this cause and advocate for a just resolution that ensures the dignity and well-being of every Nigerian worker.”
