Tyla Denies Disowning Her Black Heritage

Grammy-winning South African musician Tyla has addressed recent accusations claiming she denies her black origin, clarifying her stance on her complex heritage.

In a statement on her X page, the 22-year-old artiste emphasized that she has never rejected her black roots, despite social media misconceptions.

Tyla proudly shared her diverse ancestry, comprising black/Zulu, Irish, Mauritian/Indian, and colored roots. She explained that in South Africa, she is classified as a Coloured woman, while in other parts of the world, she is regarded as black. Acknowledging the varying cultural and geographical contexts of race classification, Tyla showed understanding and sensitivity towards the weight of the term “Coloured” outside of South Africa.

“I’ve never denied my blackness… I’m mixed with black/Zulu, Irish, Mauritian/Indian, and Coloured,” Tyla wrote. “In South Africa, I’m classified as a Coloured woman, and in other places, I’m classified as a black woman. Race is classified differently in different parts of the world… I don’t expect to be identified as Coloured outside of South Africa by anyone not comfortable doing so, because I understand the weight of that word outside of SA. But to close this conversation, I’m both Coloured in South Africa and a black woman.”

By speaking out, Tyla aims to end the misconceptions surrounding her heritage , embracing her multifaceted identity and encouraging others to respect and understand the complexities of race and cultural classification.
