Euro 2024: Germany Send Denmark Packing But Not Everyone Is Impressed
By GWG Football Editor
Germany beat hard-fighting Denmark on Saturday night to emerge the second qualifier into the quarter-finals of the Euro championship.
Two goals from Kai Havertz and Jumal Musiala in the 53rd and the 68th minutes of the game were what it took for the favoured host to advance into the quarter-finals.
GWG.ng reports that the result was a reverse of the similar feature in the 1992 event that saw Denmark send out Germany just after the nation had reunified following the merger of West and East Germany.
Denmark is now set to follow defending champions on the way home.
GWG.ng reports that the match had been interrupted by lightening and adverse weather which caused the match to be suspended for some time in the first half.
Though Germany came away top at the end of the game, not everyone was satisfied with the German machine.
Former Germany defender, Robert Huth told the BBC that the host gave away too many chances to Denmark.
He said:
“The atmosphere looked amazing and the game really got the best out of the crowd, maybe we need more thundering for the game to be good!
“It was on a knife-edge and could have gone either way, all the big decisions went Germany’s way which I am pleased with – onto the next one.
“The further you go on in the tournament the more chances you give teams, like when Nico Schlotterbeck gave the ball away and Rasmus Hojlund missed that chance – if these goals go in then it’s a different game for us.
“Leroy Sane was excellent and Jamal Musiala was good, Kai Havertz was causing problems so we have to find the right balance with being exciting going forward.
“In my opinion we gave away too many opportunities to Denmark,” said of the play of host Germany.
