In response to a wave of criticism from concerned citizens on social media, Governor Dapo Abiodun has pledged to repair 120 roads across 20 local government areas in Ogun State.

For years, residents of Ogun have struggled with deteriorating major roads, impacting both commercial and private transportation. The state, which shares multiple border communities with Lagos State, suffers in comparison to Lagos, which boasts better connecting roads.

The worst-affected areas are the communities bordering Lagos, but the issue extends to the heart of the state, including Abeokuta, where many roads are in poor condition. This situation has led to widespread dissatisfaction among residents, who have recently intensified their criticism of Governor Abiodun on social media.

One of the leading voices in the campaign is Hauwa Allahbura, an X user who started the hashtag #Dapofixogunroads. Allahbura has been actively sharing photos and videos of the deplorable roads, urging the government to take action.

The state government initially responded by noting that many of the images circulating online depicted roads managed by the Federal Government. They also listed several road projects completed by the Abiodun administration. However, this response did not satisfy the campaigners, who continued to press the government for improvements.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, the Commissioner of Works, Engr Ade Akinsanya, announced that the Abiodun administration had begun extensive road rehabilitation and construction. The prioritization of these projects will be based on available funds and the economic importance of the roads.

According to Akinsanya, stakeholders submitted a list of 120 roads across the state’s 20 local government areas. This initiative is part of Governor Abiodun’s commitment to making Ogun more attractive to local and foreign investors. The governor has involved various stakeholders, including royal fathers, lawmakers, local government chairmen, community leaders, and religious leaders, to identify critical roads in need of immediate attention.

The Commissioner confirmed that rehabilitation work has started on some roads, with contractors scheduled to begin on the remaining ones soon. Additionally, Governor Abiodun has secured collaboration from the Federal Government to rehabilitate and reconstruct 14 more roads.

Akinsanya provided a list of roads to be jointly rehabilitated with the Federal Ministry of Works, including Laderin-Train Station (Phase 1), Adesanolu Road, Mowe, Liberty Road, Oru Ijebu, Babcock Road via Ilisan market road, Ayegbami road, Iperu, Safetedo Street, Iperu, Odo-Egbe Junction/Ereko/Ondo Road Junction, Major Thompson Road, Sagamu, Methodist Church, Iperu, and Awokoya Street, Ijebu.

Here are some of the responses to the post about poor road conditions:

@Dele93748586: You’re clearly aware of what you’re doing, and there’s a hidden motive behind your posts about the roads in Ogun state. I think you should also share the state of the roads in your own state to provide a more balanced perspective.

@deuptowntrading:  Help us beg him to fix Ijebu roads too oooo

@ChukwunyeluOrji: Sun governor of the year😃😀😀

@mosky101:  There are more roads like this in the capital

@makindeoluwat16: This is how we should be dragging our leader so that dey able to do needful for masses because dey are collecting huge amount from federal government and generating revenue from dere state…..

@YusufELERUJA: Thanks for doing this .

Keep it up .

I am sure the authorities will swing into actions to make these roads safe and motorable

@Ezek_Ola21: During electoral camping, these politicians always remember to come and campaign at Ifo lg. After the election, they will forget the place as if it’s not part of the state. Akute, Olambe, Ijoko Agbado roads are in shambles. #Dapofixogunroads!

@onemindmickey: I have documentation of bad roads in Ogun State since this Dapo guy came in 2019. In some locations like Wawa, isẹri & Magboro, they use Canoe when it rains or floods. See pictures here. I have videos & all. That guy is just busy doing nothing.

@Iledare: @DapoAbiodunCON

is probably thinking of the next party as we speak…perhaps his tailor is currently taking his buba and Agbada measurements, with Aso oke cap to match. Celebrity governor.

@innocent_salami: Lets b sincere, Ogun state is the most laziest government, they have all the quality to be great, but they take back seat and allow Lagos to collect all their goodies, build road and affordable housing around places close to Lagos, u will see what will happen

@Agoababa1: Yes we have lots of road like this in ogun state, is Dapo doing badly based on statistics NO. His poor in some decisions making, no doubt.  I blame is social media handler for all these.  Baba Osoba, Sir Gbenga and SIA are part of issues that lead to where we are currently.

@itstundearc: These are the people the man in the rock of Aso is making, he convinces people who are not interested in the growth of the land to make them fall for his gimmicks, Ogun state with da riches should not have a road untared, Ogun has da worse road in all of South West. It’s a pity.

@dannyboy101000: These govs are wicked. No better way to put it. To them, governance is about paying stipends as salary. Shame on you all
