Euro 2024: Spain Defeats England to Claim Record Fourth European Championship
Spain emerged victorious in the 2024 UEFA European Championship, defeating England 2-1 in a thrilling final at Berlin’s Olympiastadion on Sunday. Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal became the hero of the night, scoring the decisive goal late in the match to secure Spain’s first major trophy in 12 years.
The lead-up to the final centered on Lamine Yamal, but it was Nico Williams and the relatively unheralded Oyarzabal who shattered England’s dreams on the grand stage.
In the first half, Luis de la Fuente’s team dominated possession but struggled to break through England’s solid defense, which effectively double-marked Williams and Yamal on the wings. Gareth Southgate’s side, meanwhile, failed to register a single shot on target before the break.
Spain came out with renewed vigor after halftime and quickly found the net, with Yamal setting up Williams for a goal just 46 seconds into the second half.
The match saw both teams exchanging opportunities, with Dani Olmo and Yamal coming close for Spain, while Jude Bellingham’s effort was one of England’s few threats. Southgate introduced Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer, who had previously combined to spark a revival in the semi-final. This tactic paid off once again as Palmer fired a low shot from 22 yards to equalize for England.
However, Spain regained their composure and netted the winning goal in the 86th minute. Oyarzabal stretched to poke in Marc Cucurella’s cross, sealing the victory for La Roja.
Despite a flurry of late substitutions by England, who were runners-up at Euro 2020, they couldn’t mount another comeback. Spain’s triumph secured their record-setting fourth Euro title, making them the nation with the most European Championship victories.
The historic win not only ended Spain’s 12-year trophy drought but also reaffirmed their dominance in European football.
