Attempted Trump Killing: Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle

US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned amid scrutiny over security lapses related to the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

This resignation follows investigations by lawmakers and an internal government watchdog into the agency’s handling of Trump’s protection and the incident where a gunman nearly succeeded in killing the 2024 Republican presidential candidate at a rally in Pennsylvania.

President Joe Biden expressed gratitude for Cheatle’s long tenure in public service. He stated, “As a leader, it takes honor, courage, and incredible integrity to take full responsibility for an organization tasked with one of the most challenging jobs in public service.”

Biden also announced that a new Secret Service director will be appointed soon, noting that the position does not require Senate approval.

Calls for Cheatle’s resignation have been bipartisan, with Republican lawmakers pushing for her impeachment.

The frustration intensified after Cheatle’s appearance before the House Oversight Committee, where she was criticized for her unwillingness to answer many questions. Despite acknowledging “significant” and “colossal” problems with the security at the rally, Cheatle had previously resisted calls for her resignation, asserting, “I think I am the best person to lead the Secret Service at this time.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson described Cheatle’s resignation as “overdue” and emphasized the need to restore public trust in the Secret Service. “Now we have to pick up the pieces,” Johnson said. “We have to rebuild the American people’s faith and trust in the Secret Service as an agency. It has an incredibly important responsibility in protecting presidents, former presidents, and other officials in the executive branch, and we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Initially, Cheatle was resolute about not stepping down. Appointed by Biden in 2022, Cheatle had previously managed Global Security at PepsiCo and served in the Secret Service for 27 years. In a recent CNN interview, Cheatle claimed the agency was “solely responsible” for security at the rally site where the gunman fired at Trump from an unsecured rooftop, resulting in one death and multiple injuries.

As details of the incident have emerged, questions have been raised about the Secret Service’s failure to control rooftop access and manage information from local law enforcement that identified the suspect as suspicious.

Discrepancies between the Secret Service and Pennsylvania law enforcement regarding the security lapses have further complicated the situation. Cheatle had pledged full cooperation with ongoing congressional and internal investigations into the Secret Service’s actions on that day.
