IGP Puts Police Units On Red Alert, Says Protesters Plotting To Storm Government Houses
Fuming over alleged attempts by protesters against hardship to take over some Government Houses, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun late on Thursday placed all police units on red alert with a warning that the police will no longer condone the breach of the law.
Speaking at a press conference late on Thursday night following the first day of the 10-day protest against hardship, IGP Egbetokun regretted that the protest turned into a riot despite earlier promises to abide by the law.
He lamented that public property was destroyed cited Niger, Abuja, Jigawa, Kano and Borno as among the states worst affected by the destruction of public and private property.
While noting that there “have been attempts to take over Government Houses” IGP Egbetokun, however, warned that the same constitution that gave them the right to protest also gave a limit to such as pertaining to the right of others.
Noting how the police acted with maximum restraint despite what he alleged as the violations of the law by the protesters, Egbetokun said:
“They trooped into the streets yet police provided security for them. There was no case where we breached their fundamental human rights yet they breached court orders.”
