Manchester City In Difficult Fight Against Relegation From Premiership
By Benjamin Abioye
Manchester City could face serious repercussions if they are found guilty of violating the English Premier League’s financial regulations.
The club have been accused of breaching 115 financial rules over a period of nine years, starting from 2009. These allegations involve providing inaccurate financial information and not properly disclosing payments to players and managers.
The investigation into these breaches began after the German publication, Der Spiegel, released documents from Football Leaks in 2018. The documents suggested that City had been funneling money from their owners through sponsors based in the United Arab Emirates.
Earlier, there were suggestions that the harshest punishment would be relegation from the Premier League. However, recent reports from The Telegraph indicate that the club could be expelled from all competitions they participate in, not just the Premier League. This includes the FA Cup, EFL Cup, Champions League, and even the upcoming Club World Cup.
Manchester City have denied any wrongdoing and are currently defending themselves at an independent inquiry. If found guilty, the consequences could greatly impact the club’s future, affecting their participation in both domestic and international tournaments, and challenging their efforts to continue their successful run in the Premier League and the Champions League.
