Chelsea Hopes Suffer As Fulham Record First Stamford Bridge Win In 45 Years
By Benjamin Abioye
Chelsea suffered a surprising 1-2 loss to Fulham, damaging their hopes of winning the Premier League.
The game was a West London derby, and Chelsea had the chance to close the gap at the top of the table. They had a 1-0 lead for most of the match, thanks to a brilliant goal by Cole Palmer in the first 15 minutes. However, Fulham scored twice in the final 10 minutes to secure the win, leaving Chelsea four points behind Liverpool in the standings.
Chelsea made just one change from their previous game, a goalless draw against Everton. Marc Cucurella returned to the starting lineup after serving a suspension, replacing Axel Disasi in defense.
In the first half, Palmer’s goal was the standout moment. He received a pass from Levi Colwill, dribbled past a couple of defenders, and calmly finished into the net. Chelsea had chances to increase their lead, but Cucurella’s header was saved by Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno, and Palmer’s shot was blocked by Calvin Bassey just before the break.
The second half saw Fulham grow in confidence. Leno made a crucial save to deny Enzo Fernandez early in the half, and Colwill had a goal ruled out for offside. Fulham started to push forward, and Alex Iwobi nearly scored with a shot that just missed the post. Robert Sanchez, Chelsea’s goalkeeper, was forced to make a quick save to stop Antonee Robinson from scoring at close range.
Fulham’s equalizer came in the 80th minute when Harry Wilson managed to deflect the ball into the net, leveling the score at 1-1. With only seconds remaining, Fulham completed their comeback when substitute Rodrigo Muniz scored the winning goal, giving them a 2-1 victory. This was Fulham’s first win at Stamford Bridge since 1979.
