Akeredolu family on naming judicial complex

The family of the late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to name an incomplete High Court complex after him.

According to Babajide Akeredolu, who spoke on behalf of the family, the gesture is “premature and insincere,” despite acknowledging that the project held deep significance for the late governor.

In a statement, the family commended the groundbreaking ceremony for the complex, which was initiated by Akeredolu. “As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a passionate advocate for the judiciary, this project was dear to his heart,” Babajide said. However, he criticized the decision to name the incomplete project after Akeredolu, stating, “True immortality lies in completing the project and ensuring its functionality.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa, during the ceremony, mentioned that naming the complex after Akeredolu was a way to honor his legacy. He noted that the late governor was committed to providing a modern judiciary complex to improve the welfare and efficiency of the judicial system.

Meanwhile, Betty Akeredolu, the late governor’s widow, rejected a memorial lecture planned by the state government in his honor. She strongly criticized the gesture, saying, “Which legacy? Lecture, my foot! This is not for Aketi because my family and I are not aware. You cannot shave Aketi’s head in his absence.”

The family also revealed their disappointment over a state-organized remembrance event that coincided with their private memorial for Akeredolu. According to them, the state government failed to inform or involve the family, which they described as a lack of courtesy and respect. “While we recognize that the state government has the prerogative to organize such events, decency demands that the family of the deceased be informed and included,” the statement read.

The Akeredolu family urged the governor to focus on completing key projects initiated by the late governor, such as upgrading Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to a university and finishing the flyover at Onyearugbulem Junction in Akure. They also called for addressing unresolved issues like abandoned road projects, unpaid deductions for civil servants, and discrepancies in salary payments.

In conclusion, the family emphasized their commitment to preserving the late governor’s legacy and called on the people of Ondo State to continue supporting their efforts. They warned against using Akeredolu’s name for political gains, stating, “His love for Ondo State must not be diminished by retrogressive policies or gimmicks.”
