A 35-year-old man narrowly escaped being lynched on Wednesday after a mob in the Okumagba area of Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, accused him of stealing a keyboard from a church.

The suspect was subjected to severe mob justice, with his attackers placing a motor tyre around his neck while parading him through Willie Street to Okumagba Avenue following the accusation of stealing a church keyboard.

Witnesses described the brutal scene, noting the man’s bloodied head and multiple injuries inflicted by the angry crowd after it was discovered he stole a keyboard belonging to an unidentified church.

As tensions escalated, the mob prepared to set the suspect ablaze to serve as a warning to other criminals. However, a swift intervention by a team of Mobile Policemen prevented the situation from turning deadly.

The officers rescued the suspect and transported him to the Police “B” Division, promising to extract information about his alleged accomplices.

Despite the rescue, the mob expressed frustration over the delay in executing street justice, lamenting the police interruption.

At the time of this report, the suspect remained in police custody, and investigations into the incident are ongoing, while the church where the keyboard was stolen is yet unknown.
