The Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has sparked an online storm after declaring that no one, regardless of wealth or status, is above the law.

Nigerians found his statement ironic, citing instances where wealthy individuals allegedly evaded justice.

Adejobi’s comments reignited discussions about the viral video earlier this month, where the sons of billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya were seen blatantly abusing the Nigerian Naira.

In the clip, the young men used a police officer as a makeshift cash tray while spraying wads of cash during a celebration. The officer involved was swiftly arrested and sanctioned for “misconduct,” but the Okoya sons, accused of violating Nigeria’s currency laws, appeared to face no consequences. Instead, they were seen at their father’s party days later, despite reports that the EFCC had invited them for questioning.

Three weeks after the incident, there has been no official update on whether the Okoya boys honored the EFCC’s invitation, leading many Nigerians to criticize the selective enforcement of the law.

Adding fuel to the fire, social media users also referenced another controversial case involving Benjamin, a murder suspect who allegedly killed Augusta in 2023 and fled to Sierra Leone.

Augusta’s brother, Heze, tracked Benjamin down and facilitated his extradition back to Nigeria. However, rumors soon emerged that Benjamin had bribed his way out of custody and fled the country again. To date, the Nigerian Police have refused to address inquiries regarding Benjamin’s whereabouts, further eroding public trust.

Nigerians took to social media to voice their frustration, accusing authorities of protecting the rich while targeting the less privileged. One comment read: “How can you say no one is above the law when we’ve seen Okoya boys walk free and a murder suspect disappear? The law in Nigeria is only for the poor.”.
