NIMC nigerians pay national card

Omanise Obaje-Adofu, Assistant Director of Card Management Services at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has reaffirmed that only the commission is authorized to issue valid National ID cards in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on NTA’s Good Morning Nigeria, the NIMC boss emphasized that efforts are ongoing to educate Nigerians about the dangers of obtaining counterfeit ID cards from unauthorized sources.

“We’ve launched several sensitization campaigns, visited media outlets, and participated in programs like this to inform the public that no business center or private entity is permitted to print or issue National ID cards,” she said.

She described the proliferation of fake National ID cards as a criminal act, explaining that these counterfeit cards lack key security features, such as the embedded chip used for identity verification.

“You’ll see many Nigerians showing off these fake cards, but a closer inspection reveals they lack the embedded chip. The official National ID card includes this chip, which can verify an individual’s identity by matching it with their fingerprints,” Obaje-Adofu explained.

The NIMC official expressed concern over reports of private business centers charging unsuspecting citizens as much as ₦5,000 for fake ID cards. She called this practice unacceptable and stressed that the issuance of National ID cards remains solely the responsibility of NIMC.

To tackle the issue, Obaje-Adofu disclosed that NIMC’s Inspectorate and Enforcement Unit is actively identifying and apprehending those involved in the illegal printing and distribution of counterfeit cards.

“When offenders are caught, they are handed over to law enforcement, and penalties as stipulated by law are enforced. We are determined to stop these illegal activities,” she said.

Despite NIMC’s efforts, Obaje-Adofu lamented that some individuals continue to engage in the fraudulent practice due to the financial gains. “It seems highly lucrative for them, but they must understand the risks. NIMC is committed to protecting the integrity of the National ID card,” she added.

She urged Nigerians to obtain their ID cards directly from NIMC and warned that severe penalties await anyone caught participating in the production or distribution of fake cards.

“This is a clear warning: the National ID card is government property, and its issuance is strictly NIMC’s responsibility. Those involved in these illegal acts will face the consequences,” Obaje-Adofu concluded.
