Liverpool Supporters, Players Lick Their Wound After FA Cup Upset
By Benjamin Abioye

Plymouth pulled off a stunning FA Cup upset against Liverpool forcing the league title contenders to lick their wounds on the loss of a cup that was within reach.
The turning point in the game against Plymouth came when Harvey Elliott handled the ball in Liverpool’s box, allowing Ryan Hardie to step up and calmly convert the spot-kick.
Liverpool dominated possession from that moment on, relentlessly pushing for an equalizer. Diogo Jota was denied by an impressive save from goalkeeper Conor Hazard, who also managed to tip Jarell Quansah’s header over the bar. As the nine minutes of added time ticked away, Plymouth held firm, defending with everything they had to seal a historic win.
For Plymouth, this victory was more than just a cup upset—it was a rare bright spot in an otherwise difficult season. Having sacked former England international Wayne Rooney as manager midway through the campaign, the struggling Championship side has won only five league games and faces the threat of relegation.
Hardie, who also had a shot deflected onto the post by Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher, was overwhelmed by the achievement. Speaking to ITV, he said, “We all came today with a dream, and the dream was to get to the next round. We’ve done it. I don’t know what to say, to be honest.”
According to Opta, this is only the fourth time in FA Cup history that the Premier League’s top team has been knocked out by a lower-division side.
Despite the setback, Liverpool remains in a strong position. They sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League, have an EFL Cup final against Newcastle next month, and are through to the last 16 of the Champions League. But for a team that looked on course for a dominant season under new manager Arne Slot, this unexpected defeat serves as a stark reminder that in football, nothing is guaranteed.
