Ramadan: Saudi Arabia Gives Fresh Update

The holy month of Ramadan 1446 has officially begun following the sighting of the crescent moon in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, February 28. This confirms that fasting will commence on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

The announcement was made by Haramain Sharifain, the official platform for the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, extending prayers for a blessed Ramadan to Muslims worldwide.

Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the Sultanate Council in Sokoto is set to make an official declaration on the start of Ramadan, pending confirmation of the moon sighting within the country. Millions of Nigerian Muslims eagerly await the announcement, which will determine the first day of fasting nationwide.

GWG.ng reports that the Sultanate Council in Sokoto has declared that the search for the new moon of Ramadan 1446AH will commence on Friday, February 28, 2025.

In an official announcement, the council urged Muslims across Nigeria to be vigilant and watch for the crescent moon on that day. Individuals who sight the moon are expected to report their observations to the nearest District or Village Head, who will then relay the information to the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who is also expected to the commencement of Ramadan fasting.

As the President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, the Sultan will verify and officially announce the sighting if confirmed.
