The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended its sittings indefinitely, escalating tensions over Governor Fubara’s 2025 budget presentation.

The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended its sittings indefinitely, escalating political tensions in the state.

The development comes amid controversy surrounding Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s plan to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

The decision to halt legislative activities was made during a session held on Friday, with Speaker Martin Amaewhule presiding. This announcement came just hours after Governor Fubara had formally notified the Speaker of his intention to appear before the Assembly to present the budget for approval.

In a letter dated March 13, 2025, the governor requested to present the budget on March 19, 2025, or on any other date deemed convenient by the House. He explained that his request was in line with a recent Supreme Court judgment and a prior demand by the lawmakers for a fresh budget presentation.

Recalling a previous failed attempt, Fubara noted that he and his entourage were denied access to the Assembly complex when he first tried to present the budget.

“You may recall my failed visit to the Rivers State House of Assembly on Wednesday, 12th March 2025, for the presentation of the 2025 Rivers State Budget in compliance with the judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” his letter stated.

The governor also expressed frustration over the situation, revealing that while a soft copy of the budget was sent to the Speaker in advance, the Clerk of the House had allegedly refused to accept the hard copy.

“Despite the House issuing a 48-hour ultimatum for me to present the 2025 budget, we were yet to be served with the certified true copy of the Supreme Court judgment and accompanying enrolled orders,” Fubara wrote.

He further emphasized the need for all arms of government to respect constitutional boundaries and urged the lawmakers to focus on governance rather than political conflicts.

“The Supreme Court has directed that all arms of government should exercise their powers and perform their duties within the ambits of the Constitution and ordinary laws of our country, and this we must do to end the lingering stalemate and advance the progress of our state and the well-being of our people,” he stated.

Despite the ongoing standoff, Fubara called for unity and urged all parties to put the interests of the state above personal and political disputes.

“No matter the depth of our differences, we believe the interests of the state and our people should take priority over political conflicts,” he said.
