Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered a commanding performance to secure a 2-0 victory over Rwanda in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Amahoro Stadium. Star striker Victor Osimhen was the hero of the night, netting both goals in the first half to ensure Nigeria grabbed a much-needed three points.

The game kicked off with both teams eager to establish dominance, but Nigeria quickly took control. Right from the first whistle, the Super Eagles showed urgency, pressing high and moving the ball quickly. Osimhen and Ademola Lookman were particularly dangerous in attack, constantly testing Rwanda’s defense.

It didn’t take long for Nigeria’s pressure to pay off. In the 11th minute, Osimhen found himself in the right place at the right time. After a well-placed pass into the box, the Napoli forward unleashed a powerful shot that beat Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari, giving Nigeria an early 1-0 lead. The goal silenced the home crowd and gave the Super Eagles even more confidence.

Despite falling behind, Rwanda tried to push forward in search of an equalizer. Midfielder Djihad Bizimana and winger Innocent Nshuti made some attacking runs, but Nigeria’s defense, led by William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey, remained solid.

Just before halftime, Osimhen struck again. In the 45+3rd minute, Nigeria won the ball in midfield and launched a quick counterattack. Osimhen drove forward, gliding past two defenders before slotting the ball past Ntwari with composure. His second goal of the match gave Nigeria a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into the break.

The second half saw Rwanda make some changes, bringing on fresh legs in attack, including Kevin Muhire and Jean Bosco Ruboneka, in an attempt to break through Nigeria’s defense. However, the home side struggled to create clear-cut chances. Nigeria’s defense remained disciplined, cutting off Rwanda’s supply into the box.

The Super Eagles, now in control, focused on maintaining possession and slowing down the game. Midfielders Alex Iwobi and Alhassan Yusuf played key roles in keeping the ball moving and preventing Rwanda from gaining momentum.

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle made some substitutions in the final 20 minutes, bringing on Tolu Arokodare and Samuel Chukwueze to keep the attack fresh. Meanwhile, Osimhen received a well-earned rest in the 77th minute, coming off to applause from Nigerian fans in the stadium.

As the clock ran down, Nigeria remained composed, ensuring they didn’t allow Rwanda any opportunities to mount a late comeback. The home side had a couple of long-range efforts, but goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was largely untroubled.

By the final whistle, Nigeria had secured a well-deserved victory, climbing up the table in their qualifying group. For Rwanda, it was a frustrating night as they struggled to break down a disciplined Nigerian defense.

For Nigeria, this win is a huge boost in their bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. They will look to build on this momentum in their next match. Rwanda, on the other hand, will need to regroup quickly if they want to stay in the race for qualification.

Osimhen’s brilliance once again proved decisive, and the Super Eagles will be counting on him as they continue their World Cup qualification journey.
