IWD: Plateau Women Celebrate Relative Peace
By Marie-Therese Nanlong

The women’s wing of the Mwaghavul Development Association, the tribal group in the Mangu local government area of Plateau State have marched out in their numbers to celebrate the relative peace being enjoyed in the area in recent times.
Recall that in 2023, many communities in Mangu were sacked by armed men who killed, injured, and displaced the people, but in recent times, there has been some calm as efforts are being intensified to return the surviving displaced persons to their ancestral homes.
Commemorating this year’s International Women’s Day with the theme Accelerate Action, the National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA) Women Wing, Mrs. Grace Gora, said the women, dressed in white, gathered to appreciate God for the relative peace that has returned to the land.
Addressing the women who earlier marched through the streets to the Mangu mini stadium venue of the event, Gora said, “We are not only celebrating the strength and resilience of women but also giving thanks for the relative peace that has returned to Mangu. Two years ago, we wore black with a heavy heart and cried over the loss of our people and the burning of our property.
“We were chased out of our homes, under the sun and in the rain, we were not sleeping but God answered our prayers and gave us relative peace, that is why we use this moment to thank Him. We appreciate the effort of Governor Caleb Mutfwang in ensuring peace in Mangu, we are hopeful that by the grace of God, we will return to the farms this farming season.
“We are dressed in white to show our appreciation, women from all walks of life are here because peace is not just for Mwaghavul women, but every tribe living in Mangu. With the theme, accelerate action, we are accelerating the action by being grateful to God and everyone who has worked for peace in Mangu.”
Also speaking, the Chairperson of the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, Mrs. Olivia Dazyam, the Chairman of Mangu local government area, Emmanuel Mwolpun represented by his wife, Mrs. Nanbyen Mwolpun, representatives of other women groups, commended the initiative and appealed for more commitments for a lasting peace.
Dazyem noted that insecurity had caused much harm, especially to the girl-child as unscrupulous people hid under help and trafficked children for cheap labour.
However, the National President of MDA, Bulus Dabit, represented by Obadiah Dalong, urged the women to continue to uphold the tribe in prayers and support their husbands.
