CAN Felicitates With Muslims On Eid-el-Fitr, Condemns Edo Mob Killing
By Gideon Ayeni

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has extended warm felicitations to the Muslim community on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr while calling for unity and national harmony amid rising security concerns in the country.
In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN acknowledged the significance of Ramadan, noting that its values of prayer, fasting, charity, and community resonate deeply with Christians. The association emphasized the need for interfaith unity as Nigeria faces daunting security and economic challenges.
However, CAN also used the opportunity to draw attention to a tragic incident that recently shook the nation—a mob killing in Uromi, Edo State, where sixteen hunters traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for Eid celebrations were brutally murdered. Mistaken for kidnappers due to their traditional hunting tools, the men were beaten and burned alive in a horrifying act of extrajudicial violence.
Describing the attack as a “grievous violation of human rights,” CAN condemned the lawlessness that led to the tragic deaths and extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families. The association warned that such acts of jungle justice undermine the rule of law and erode public trust in Nigeria’s legal system.
“The government must act decisively to address these failures and ensure justice is served,” the statement read, urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to book.
CAN further called on leaders at all levels to promote understanding and discourage mob actions. It reaffirmed its commitment to interfaith dialogue and cooperation with Muslim leaders to foster national unity.
As Nigerians mark Eid-el-Fitr, CAN urged citizens to embrace compassion, forgiveness, and mutual respect, emphasizing that such values are key to building a peaceful and just society.
“Eid Mubarak to our Muslim brothers and sisters,” Archbishop Okoh concluded, encouraging all Nigerians to stand together against violence and division.
