A fire has broken out on the LagFerry vessel Igbega Eko Lagos, injuring four passengers. The incident on Thursday morning has sparked an investigation into its cause with authorities assuring that the safety of passengers had been prioritised.

Several passengers were injured and rushed to safety when the LagFerry boat, Igbega Eko, exploded and caught fire while traveling to Victoria Island.

The fire occurred early Thursday morning, and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed the incident, stating that their personnel were on-site to control the situation and prevent further damage.

A loud explosion was heard, followed by flames engulfing the boat. While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, investigations are currently ongoing, according to a NIWA representative. The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) also confirmed the incident and added that the cause is still being investigated.

In a statement released by LASWA’s Public Affairs Unit, it was confirmed that the fire started around 6:45 AM at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu. The boat, which was heading to Victoria Island, was evacuated promptly. LASWA reported that four passengers sustained minor injuries and are receiving medical attention.

The statement from LASWA read, “Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team swiftly mobilized to the scene, working in close coordination with LAGFERRY, boat operators, and other first responders to manage the situation effectively. All passengers and crew were evacuated safely, though four passengers suffered minor injuries.”

LASWA further assured the public that investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with cooperation from LAGFERRY and other relevant parties. The agency emphasized that safety remains a top priority, and it is committed to taking necessary actions to improve fire prevention measures on Lagos waterways.

“LASWA assures the public that all safety protocols remain intact and ferry operations are proceeding as scheduled. We encourage all passengers to stay calm and follow safety guidelines,” the statement concluded.
