Legendary Football Administrator Passes Away at 77
The African football community is mourning the loss of Issa Hayatou, former President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), who passed away on Thursday in Paris, just a day shy of his 78th birthday.
Issa Hayatou built a remarkable legacy that spread over three decades and left an indelible mark on African football. During his tenure as CAF President from 1988 to 2017, he oversaw significant growth and development, including the expansion of the Africa Cup of Nations, increased African representation in the FIFA World Cup, and strengthening of football infrastructure across the continent.
Additionally, Hayatou served as interim FIFA President from 2015 to 2016, navigating the organization through a tumultuous period with his characteristic leadership and calm demeanor.
Born on August 9, 1946, in Garoua, Cameroon, Hayatou’s contributions to football extend beyond administration. He was also a former footballer, making him a true legend of the sport.
