The attack on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the Young Progressive Party, YPP candidate in the Anambra governorship election at the Alaba International Market, Lagos on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 came as a shock to many.

The shock was that the attack on Ubah came not just from Igbo traders, but also from the segment of the Igbo population where Ubah is said to be especially popular with, that is the youths.

The attackers who chased Ubah away from the market also chanted the name of the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB as they pelted Ubah and his entourage.

The development in Lagos has also drawn questions and posers for Ifeanyi Ubah, especially as to what he was doing campaigning in Lagos while his land, Anambra was under attack from ‘Unknown Gunmen.”

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Ifeanyi Ubah had until recently basked in the popularity he had among the youths, especially in the two Nnewi local government areas, Nnewi North and South.

However, that popularity according to sources has over time been eaten away by the problems he has had with some Nnewi billionaires, principally Mr. Maduka and Gabros.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that there is a culture of supporting one another among the people of Nnewi with the billionaires often guaranteeing loans, providing assistance for up and coming ones. It is that culture that has made Nnewi arguably the billionaire capital of Nigeria.

However, the issues with Cosmas Maduka and Gabros has tainted Ubah among the younger ones in Alaba who may have seen his reported issues with the elders as a threat to the culture at home.

Also important if not overwhelming is the Nnamdi Kanu factor. It is the opinion of some Igbo that Nnamdi Kanu has been unjustly held for saying those things that people like Ifeanyi Ubah refuse to say. As such they see his every day in detention as wrong and felt that Ifeanyi Ubah and other political leaders should prioritise the release of the IPOB leader over political ascendancy.
