Osinbajo Taunted As Irrelevant In Buhari’s Govt
By Emmnauel Adigwe
The news that the federal government has snubbed the report of a committee headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on the nation’s response to COVID-19 has again raised questions on his presence in the administration. With the latest development, Osinbajo was taunted as irrelevant in the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
According to the report, the Economic Sustainability Committee led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had recommended that while the National Youth Service Corps programme could continue, the three-week orientation exercise should be suspended for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The recommendation read in part: “The immediate focus in the education sector is to address the disruptions caused by the pandemic and ensuring social distancing measures at all levels of education.
“In a similar context, consideration will be given to suspending the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp exercises for at least 24 months while allowing deployment to places of primary assignment. This will ensure that there is no backlog in the national service placement pipeline.”
However, according to news reports at the weekend, the federal government has snubbed the recommendation of the Osinbajo led committee as orientation camps will be re-opened nationwide next Tuesday.
A presidential aide who spoke on condition of anonymity disclosed that he had no clue as to why the recommendation of the vice president was dumped.
“We are all surprised that the NYSC is going ahead with re-opening orientation camps at a time when infections are increasing. It is completely avoidable because the orientation can be done online and corps members can get their postings afterwards,” the aide said.
Reacting to this development, a cross section of social media commentators took to their social media accounts dragging the vice president and former Lagos State Commissioner for Justice.
GWG had earlier reported how Osinbajo was dragged recently when America’s vice president, Mike Pence, spoke against the invasion of the US Capitol which was ordered by his principal, Donald Trump. Many Nigerians had compared Osinbajo with Mike Pence saying that while Mike Pence is loyal to his country, Osinbajo is loyal to President Buhari and his party, All Progressive Congress, APC.
Before now a couple of initiatives taken by Osinbajo were publicly disowned by President Buhari. Osinbajo had appointed Matthew Seiyefa as acting DG, Department of State Services, DSS while Buhari was on sick leave and he was promptly removed on Buhari’s return. Osinbajo had also nominated Walter Onnoghen as Chief Justice in order of hierarchy and he was forced to resign.
The new revelation that a recommendation of the vice president was ignored has made many to raise eyebrows, asking questions about his relevance in the government. Osinbajo was taunted as irrelevant in the issues of the Buhari administration.
