Potency Of Pfizer, Moderna Vaccines Against Coronavirus Reducing
The potency of Pfizer, Moderna vaccines against infection with Coronavirus is noticeably falling according to a new study just made available from research conducted by scientists at the University of Utah, United States of America.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Pfizer and Moderna are among the most popular vaccines that have been produced to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. At launch just 10 months ago the potency of the two vaccines was in the 90% range.
However, over months a study just released has shown potency falling to 80% with fears that it would continue to fall over the coming months.
The study in eight different locations in the United States involved more than 4136 health workers who had not contracted the coronavirus.
Out of the study figure, 2976 participants were fully vaccinated between December 2020 and March 21, while the remaining 1,160 were not vaccinated. According to the study, the vaccines were only 80 percent effective against the individuals who had been fully vaccinated with the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccines. That is against the 90% effective rate at the launch of the vaccines.
The study was reported in the Morbidity Mortality Weekly Report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and was carried out by scientists at the University of Utah.
The scientists relied on findings of the RT-PCR test results to come to their conclusion on the declining potency.
The study, however, did not assess the potency of the vaccine in protection during ill-health as it was only devoted to studying infection rates.
The scientists observed that the decline could be due to the waning of the vaccine-activated defences against the virus with the passage of time. Another probable reason given by the scientists was the less protection by the vaccine to the ravaging Delta variant of the Coronavirus.
