Aguero Faces Possible Retirement Following Heart Condition Diagnosis
Reports are conflicted over whether Sergio Aguero will be forced to retire as a result of his cardiac arrhythmia diagnosis.
Aguero was forced off in the first half during Barcelona’s draw with Alaves last month with chest pains. After spending time in hospital it was announced that he had been diagnosed with the heart condition, with the striker being told to rest up for three months.
However, according to Catalunya Radio, his return after this break is in doubt. The report states that there is a “certain pessimism” about Aguero’s recovery with the player already considering retiring from the game altogether.
They do note that nothing is decided yet though, with Aguero set to undergo further tests during his time away from the first team.
The fear is that unlike Barcelona Femini star Caroline Graham Hansen – who was recently diagnosed with benign arrhythmia, the Argentine’s cardiac problem could be more complex and therefore unable to be rectified by an operation.
However, these reports have been conflicted by ESPN, who state that sources close to the player have said it would be “irresponsible” to speculate on his future before the three-month break is completed.
Aguero himself has chimed in on the matter too, tweeting a message on Friday which read: “Given the rumours, I tell them that I am following the indications of the club’s doctors, doing tests and treatment and seeing my progress within 90 days. Always positive.”
Incoming Barça head coach Xavi will be hopeful that Aguero’s condition can be managed as his side is short of firepower upfront. Due to the absences of Martin Braithwaite, Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembele, they started the season with Luuk de Jong up top.
