The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that the automation of the application process for Nigerian passports is at 99% completion and is expected to go live next week.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he emphasized the simplification of the passport application process, making it more convenient for Nigerians.

Tunji-Ojo explained that with the automation, individuals will only need to visit an immigration center for biometric capture, while the rest of the application process, including uploading passport pictures and supporting documents, can be done online from the comfort of their homes.

The minister reiterated the commitment to reforming the passport management system, addressing the current chaotic application process. He emphasized the need to make life easier for people and revealed plans to enable online form submission and payments starting from December.

Highlighting the reforms, Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the frustrating and time-consuming enrollment procedures were coming to an end. He emphasized the right of Nigerians to experience a smooth and seamless passport application process.

With the upcoming changes, individuals applying for passports will fill forms and make payments online, drastically reducing the need for physical visits to passport offices. The minister emphasized that biometric capture would be the only in-person requirement, making the entire process more efficient.

Tunji-Ojo pointed out that the days of sacrificing a whole day to enroll in a passport office were over and considered such inconveniences unacceptable. He stated that Nigerians have the right to a seamless experience in the application and processing of passports.

In addition, the Minister provided an update on the backlog of passports, revealing that 204,322 international passports are now ready for collection out of the initial backlog of over 300,000. However, only 99,901 have been collected from the available passports.
