In a formal petition, public interest and human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has called upon the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, urging him to investigate and punish a group of Army personnel allegedly involved in the assault of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Edet Inyang.

The incident is reported to have occurred on December 9, 2023, at a store near the Nigerian Army’s 63 Brigade in Asaba, Delta State.

Effiong’s statement, titled “How Nigerian Army Personnel Tortured and Brutalized Serving Police Officer ASP Edet Inwang Till He Lost Consciousness Over Alleged Wrong Parking,” provides a detailed account, supported by video and photo evidence, of the alleged assault. ASP Edet Inyang, who was posted to the Delta State Police Command, was reportedly attacked after parking his vehicle at a store to make a purchase.

According to the statement, Inyang, in an attempt to comply with a soldier’s instruction, was confronted by Lance Corporal Onyibuchi and approximately 10 other soldiers who brutally assaulted him. The lawyer emphasized that the soldiers’ actions, if proven true, constitute a violation of fundamental human rights.

Effiong’s petition urges the Chief of Army Staff to identify the alleged culprits and ensure they face the full consequences of the law. The statement also seeks compensation for ASP Edet Inyang, who is currently receiving medical attention for injuries sustained during the assault.

Effiong states, “We cannot continue to live in a country where the rights of citizens are abused brazenly without consequences,” as he calls for urgent action from the Nigerian Army.
